Typical of the Mediterranean, this plant is emblematic because it changes appearance depending on the season: in winter and spring it is green, and in the summer it becomes a skeletal leafless shrub. It flowers from April to June and its branches, if broken, release a white latex skin irritant. In the remaining periods of the year its activity nearly stops and the plant loses all its leaves. It thrives in arid coastal environments, especially around calcareous rocks and high cliffs of up to 700 m. It is widespread in the Mediterranean, from the Aegean coast to Spain.
