This bird is about 50 cm long and weighs about 600 g. It has long narrow wings with a span of about a metre. Its plumage on its back is brown, clearer on its neck and white on its breast. Its beak is yellow and its feet are pink which make it a sea bird, able to dive up to 10 metres and catch its prey on both the surface of the water and underwater. Whilst a wonderful swimmer it is a clumsy flier. When it feeds and when it goes back to its nesting area, the females and males communicate by emitting a sharp cry similar to that of a baby or a cat in heat. Degree of protection: L. 157/92, Dir.
