Wild Strawberry

Wild Strawberry

This bush is also known as Albatross, it is a shrub or a small tree and its name (Arbutus unedo) is probably due to its sour taste (the Celtic 'ar means sour and butus means bush). This bush or small tree will often flower and bear fruit at the same time, maintaining its characteristic colours: its bright red fruit, its white flowers and its green leaves. A very valuable and characteristic honey is produced from this plant, famous for its bitter and aromatic taste. The Wild Strawberry was used during the Renaissance Period to symbolise the Italian flag due to its vivid red, green, and white colour. This plant has always been valued for the antiseptic, astringent and diuretic properties of its leaves.
